Childbirth Education - Is this really necessary?

Would you run a marathon without having prepared your body, mind and spirit?  Of course not!  Giving birth and running a marathon are often compared to one another by moms who have done both....and many say that running a marathon was the easier of the two.  In order to be successful at having the birth YOU want to have, you must prepare your mind, your body and your spirit.  And there is no better time to start your journey of preparation than right now!
What will I learn in your course?

I have taught courses that last 2 months, and I have taught courses that last 2 hours.  This 1 day crash course is plain and simple, the absolute basics of childbirth education.  After the course is completed, should you want to continue your childbirth education in a one-on-one or small group setting with me, I am happy to create a personalized schedule upon request.  However, in this 1 day course, we will discuss the following topics:

I.                   Birth Media vs. Birth Reality

II.                 Discomforts & Warning Signs

III.               Body Mechanics

IV.               Labor & Delivery

V.                Transition & Birth

VI.              Common Hospital Procedures

VII.             Pain Relief & Medications

VIII.           Newborn Characteristics

IX.               Postpartum Recovery

X.                Creating a Support Network

When is the class, and how long does it last?

The childbirth education 1 day course is offered on the 3rd Saturday of every month, from 9:00am - 5:00pm.  The day begins immediately at 9:00am, and the last session ends at exactly 5:00pm, unless the group question and answer session runs longer.

Lunch and snacks will be provided, and breaks are built into the day so that you will have the chance to stretch and regroup---but be forewarned, it is an action packed day to say the least.

What do I need to bring?

Being pregnant can be hard on one's basic level of comfort, so if you have a favorite pillow or chair, definitely bring it along.  We will not be sitting at tables all day, but rather moving about the learning environment so that we stay focused and engaged in creating the best childbirth education experience possible.  I encourage you to bring a blanket or two, pillows, a focal point that you plan to use during the birth (such as a candle, small sculpture, necklace or other small object from home that you love, your favorite lotions or oils for massage practice, and an open mind.

Do I need a partner to attend the class with me?

I'm going to be honest.  Yes.  Giving birth is a challenge on so many levels, and while I wish that I could say, "no...you can do this on your own," I wouldn't be doing you any favors and you would curse me come the big day.  If you do not have a birth partner, please contact me so that we can speak more about birth doula services.  If a birth doula is outside of your financial reach, call me anyway.  No woman will ever birth alone if I have a say in it unless it is 100% her desire and request.

How much is the class?

$75, including lunch and snacks, payable by cash or check one week prior to the class unless other arrangements have been made.

How many people are in one class?
A typical class has anywhere from 4-10 couples.
Do you offer private instruction?

Yes.  Please contact me to discuss your personal requests and I will put together a proposal for you.

If I am planning to have a natural birth, epidural or cesarean, do I really need to take this class?
100% Yes,Yes, and Yes.  The families who have taken my class leave feeling very prepared for ANY birth scenario.  While we all have ideals of what we would like our birth experience to be, it is also important to be aware of other information so that if necessary, we can make an informed last minute decision.  I will not hide the fact that I think natural childbirth is best for both mom and baby, but birth is a personal and sacred experience, and there is undoubtedly a time and place for epidurals and cesareans, just as there should be unconditional support for the mom who seeks a natural birth experience.
